Lautoka, Fiji is one of the important cities in Fiji and is also the second largest city of the country as well. Lautoka, Fiji is situated on the western side of the Viti Levu island. This is also situated to the north of Nadi and is 25kms from there. Lautoka, Fiji lies within the sugarcane growing region and therefore has been nicknamed as the Sugar City. The city covers a land area of 16 square kilometers. Lautoka, Fiji has a population of around 42,917 people.
There are various sugar factories in Lautoka, Fiji as it is situated in the sugarcane region of Fiji. This is also the main revenue earner as well. One of the major Sugar factories here is Lautoka Sugar Mill. This is also considered to be the biggest employer in the region as well. This company was built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company. Most of the laborers here were from India and from the Solomon Islands. This company was established in Lautoka, Fiji in between 1899 and 1903. There are around 1300 employees in the company today. Other industries which dominated the economy of Lautoka, Fiji includes blending, steelworks, fishing, hatchery, domestic items, paints,construction, timber milling, garment manufacturing, distillery, brewery and jewelery.

Lautoka, Fiji was declared a city in the year 1977. This city is governed by a city council which is of 16 members. Among these 16 member council, one person is declared the mayor of the city. Presently, the Fiji Labor Party is the ruling party here and the mayor of Lautoka, Fiji is Bijesh Chand. He has succeeded Rajesh Goundar. An important fact that should be noted here is that more than 50 percent of Fiji's population lives in Lautoka, Fiji . Other than this, there are the National Marketing Authority, Fiji Electricity Authority and the Fiji Pine Ltd located here.
